6 Things You Should Know Before Trying Hypnotherapy

Oct 20, 2023

When considering trying hypnotherapy, there are probably a few things holding you back from trying it.

You may not be sure if it is the right approach for you, or you may have heard some misconceptions about the nature of hypnosis. If either of these is true, here are six things you should know:

1. Hypnotherapy sessions on TV are for entertainment purposes.

If you’ve seen someone get hypnotised on tv, chances are they’re doing something strange-like barking like a dog or meowing like a cat. In an actual hypnotherapy session, there are no swinging pocket watches in front of you, and you’d never be asked to do something against your own will.

You’re in control the entire time, and the idea that you’ll forget everything that happened during hypnosis isn’t true. A majority of people remember sessions clearly, and only a tiny percent of people enter a deep state that keeps them from remembering what happened.

2. Hypnotherapy isn’t a miracle worker.

While hypnosis is safe, effective, and can work quickly, it’s no magic wand. It won’t change your life overnight. Just like it takes days, weeks, even months to create a new habit, it can take several sessions to see what it can really do for you. Having said that, most people notice a significant shift after just the first session.

3. Anyone can be hypnotised.

But, you have to want it to work. Since nobody can be hypnotised against their own will, the suggestions provided by your hypnotherapist will only work if you want them to. Working with a hypnotherapist is a collaborative process, so there is an established rapport and trust for it to work. If you feel safe and go into it with an open mind and desire to succeed, you’re more likely to experience the outcome you’re looking for.

4. Always choose a hypnotherapist you feel comfortable with.

As mentioned earlier, rapport is essential when it comes to a successful outcome. Talk to your hypnotherapist before committing; it’s a great way to get a sense of whether or not you see yourself working with them, especially if you’re hesitant or unsure.

5. Hypnosis is not the same as sleeping.

It’s a heightened receptive state, where the body may be in a state of relaxation while the mind stays alert.

Your hypnotherapist’s goal is to ensure that you maintain a relaxed awareness throughout the session and stay awake. Even though your mind may drift, you’ll still be able to hear what’s being said to you.

6. There are only two things you need before you start

You’re just two steps away from starting your sessions, and they’re straightforward:

A Willingness to Embrace Positive Change
You should be open to the idea of making your life better through hypnotherapy. The key is your willingness to give it a try.

A Specific Issue to Address
Hypnotherapy is most effective when you have a particular goal in mind, such as losing weight. It’s all about intention and your desire to transform your life with an open mind.

    So what should you expect?

Your Hypnotherapist will go over the process of hypnosis with you and establish goals for treatment. Once the session gets started, your therapist will work to get you in to that hypnotic state often describing images that promote security, and wellbeing.

Once you’re in this receptive state, your therapist will provide suggestions related to your goals. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, they may help you visualise vivid images of yourself once that weight is lost.

When the session ends, you’ll bring yourself out of the deeply relaxed state with the guidance of your therapist. In some cases, you’ll be able to practice self-hypnosis outside of session-so you can use it as needed, such as after a long, stressful day at work.

The bottom line about trying hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is an all-natural experience that could transform your life. If you’re curious about how hypnotherapy can help you overcome your specific challenges, contact me now for a confidential chat on how you can take the first step.
